Made-to-measure heat pump cover

The outdoor unit of a heat pump is bigger than an air conditioner and usually sits on the ground beside the house, in plain view from the garden and the street. We build the cover the same way as our air conditioner covers: aluminium or steel, made to measure, open at the back and on a stronger base.

How it differs from an air conditioner cover

Frequently asked questions

How do you hide an air conditioner or heat pump outdoors?
The usual answer is a louvred cover built from horizontal bars, wrapped around the unit on three sides with the back left open. It hides the unit from the garden and the street without blocking the air outlet. A solid enclosure or a timber box normally restricts the flow and raises the electricity bill.
Does a heat pump cover affect performance?
A correctly sized cover does not. What matters is keeping the service clearances from the unit's manual and leaving the air outlet free — which is why our covers have an open back and a gap between the bars. An enclosure that is too tight makes the unit draw in its own exhaust and run longer.
How much space should be left around the outdoor unit?
The binding figures are the ones in your unit's manual — typically 10–20 cm at the sides and 30–50 cm in front of the air outlet. Heat pump makers usually ask for more than air conditioner makers. We size the cover from the unit's dimensions plus that clearance.
How does a heat pump cover differ from an air conditioner cover?
In size and in how it stands. A heat pump is wider and sits on the ground, so the cover is free-standing with a stronger frame and a base. An air conditioner more often hangs on wall brackets, and its cover can be lighter and smaller.
What are the covers made of?
Powder-coated aluminium or laser-cut steel. Aluminium does not rust and is lighter; steel allows more freedom in the cut-out pattern. Both are painted in any RAL colour.
